Protect Ponta is made up of volunteers, a gang of like-minded folk who are passionate about caring for and protecting the stray and community animals in Southern Mozambique.
The primary focus of the project is to offer veterinary services to these communities and to educate people on the value of caring for their animals.
Regular clinics are conducted in Ponta do Ouro, Ponta Malongane, Ponta Mamoli and Zintundo.

This is a brief overview of what we do…

FOOD DISTRIBUTION

Food is purchased by Protect Ponta through our feeding scheme.
A big thank you to Boxer Manguzi who donate 50% of whatever we buy! You guys are amazing, and we really appreciate it.

We also encourage holiday makers to take a bag or two of dog food to Oceana in Ponta do Ouro (inside Motel Do Mar) or Mar Azul Estate in Ponta Malongane (just north of Sunset Shack).
It saves us valuable money which can be invested in sterilisations.
Food is distributed to people who are registered with Protect Ponta, whose animals are sterilised and who regularly attend clinics. It is not easy for locals to get dog or cat food and this distribution ensures that animals do not scavenge and become a nuisance (like stealing the occasional chicken!)

STERILISATIONS

In an ideal world, animals should be sterilised before breeding gets out of hand. A single cat or dog can be responsible for 20,000 descendants in five years. Post operation the animals become calmer, fight less, get fewer diseases and obviously don’t produce vast quantities of unwanted kittens and puppies each year. Therefore, the animal population becomes more stable and less transient. It is a win-win for the local community.

CLINICS

Clinics are planned approximately 12 weeks apart.
This enables the project to stay on top of the animal population and offers the local community a consistent and reliable veterinary service. This outreach program also promotes pet education into the rural community. The dogs and cats are immunized against rabies, neutered or spayed, protected against fleas and ticks and de-wormed.
